There are several ways to use technology to achieve learning outcomes more effectively and to increase engagement through fun! Here are some tools that work well in the context of a standard 50-minute tutorial session.

Kahoot!

Cost: Free, with paid upgrades available

Useful for: Concept mastery, test review, pre-assessment, formative assessment

Kahoot! is a free online tool for creating engaging quiz- or poll-like learning games. They are simple to build, and no software download is necessary. Students can access your individual game live using a PIN with any digital device and will laugh and tease as they compete against each other for points. Team-based and points-free modes are also available. Many students are familiar with this software and love it. Plus, the background music is infectious. Build your first Kahoot!

Padlet

Cost: Free (can host up to three Padlets), with upgrades available

Useful for: Brainstorming, review, collaborative activities, pre-assessment

Padlet is a wall- or board-making software where users can contribute live posts to easily see and build on each other’s ideas. In the screenshot above, students were each assigned a theory from the course content and were tasked with coming up with three sample exam questions for the rest of their class to practice with. Padlet is an incredibly versatile tool where you can also share photos, create timelines, and have live discussions. Check out Padlet.
